MTS is what Sony, Panasonic and Canon camcorders write when recording AVCHD, typically H.264 at 1080i or 1080p with multichannel audio. The files live inside a folder structure on the memory card rather than standing on their own. Convert them once they are copied off, since plenty of editing software and nearly every phone will not open MTS directly.

A transport stream, .ts, is built for broadcast. Data is cut into fixed size packets so a receiver can start playing partway through and recover after a dropout. Television tuners, capture cards and Blu-ray authoring tools all produce it, often as a pile of segments that converting turns into one file you can scrub through.
