MTSIN
MTS is what Sony, Panasonic and Canon camcorders write when recording AVCHD, typically H.264 at 1080i or 1080p with multichannel audio. The files live inside a folder structure on the memory card rather than standing on their own. Convert them once they are copied off, since plenty of editing software and nearly every phone will not open MTS directly.
M4VOUT
M4V is Apple's variant of MP4, used for films and shows bought through iTunes. Structurally it matches an MP4, and an unprotected M4V plays almost anywhere. The exception is a file carrying Apple's FairPlay copy protection, which stays locked to Apple's own apps and cannot be converted.
