Six ways to aim
Switch method any time before you startLight, Medium or Strong. Nothing to read up on, and Medium is the right answer more often than not.
Fix the quality and let the size land where it lands. Low numbers hold detail, high numbers give it up.
Ask for forty percent of what you started with and the bitrate is worked out backwards from the running time.
Type the ceiling the upload form gives you. The encode is planned to come in under it rather than near it.
Set the number yourself when a delivery spec already tells you what it has to be.
Vertical 9:16, square 1:1 and wide 16:9 profiles that match what the big social and chat apps accept on upload.
Two codecs
The choice comes down to one question: does the file need to play anywhere, or does it need to be as small as possible?
- —Plays on effectively every browser, phone and TV
- —Encodes quickly, even on long clips
- —The safe pick when you do not know the recipient
- —Roughly a third smaller at matching quality
- —Earns its keep on 1080p and 4K material
- —Slower to encode, and older devices may refuse it
H.264 is the default for a reason. Move to H.265 when you control both ends and every megabyte counts.
Resolution on the way down
Keep the original frame or step it to 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p. Downscaling is usually the cheapest saving available.
Seventeen inputs
Phone recordings, screen captures, camera cards and old archive containers all go in the same panel.
Wiped when it ends
Source and output are cleared from the worker once you have your file. Nothing is retained for analysis.
Questions
How visible is the loss?
At the Medium preset most people cannot separate the two files on a phone or a laptop screen. Push past CRF 32 and flat areas such as sky or shadow start to band first.
Which CRF number should I type?
Start at 28. Drop toward 23 when the footage has fine texture or fast motion, climb toward 34 when the clip is a screen recording or a talking head and size is the priority.
Why does everything come back as MP4?
MP4 carrying H.264 or H.265 is the one container that plays everywhere without a plugin or a codec pack. Handing you an exotic wrapper would only create a second problem.
What are the limits?
Up to 5 files in a batch and 200 MB per file. Seventeen input formats go in; an MP4 comes out.
Do you keep the footage?
No. Your upload is processed in an isolated worker and erased when the encode finishes. It is never watched, sampled or stored.
