MP4 is the container to reach for when a file has to play somewhere you do not control: a phone, a smart TV, a browser tab, a client's laptop. WebM was built by Google for video that plays inside a web page with no plugin involved. It pairs VP8 or VP9 video with Opus or Vorbis audio, and no codec royalties attach to it, so shipping it on a site raises no licensing questions. It suits background clips, product demos and anything embedded straight into HTML.
