What the archive converter covers

Anything that needs to leave one container and arrive in another, with the directory tree untouched.

  • Read a RAR, CAB or JAR on a machine that has no tool for it, as ZIP
  • Re-pack a bulky ZIP as 7Z or TAR.XZ and take a real bite out of its size
  • Produce the TAR.GZ a deploy script or CI job insists on
  • Unwrap DEB and RPM packages into a plain archive you can look through
  • Standardise a mixed pile of downloads on one container format
  • Swap the compression algorithm without disturbing folder structure

Worth knowing

Thirteen containers

Eight formats read and write. RAR, JAR, CAB, DEB and RPM are read-only, because writing those cleanly is somebody else's licensing problem.

The tree stays put

Nested folders, empty directories and long file names come out arranged the way they went in. Nothing is flattened.

Denser packing

Moving a ZIP to 7Z or TAR.XZ usually reclaims a serious amount of space, and not a single byte of content is dropped to do it.

Unix-shaped output

TAR, TAR.GZ and CPIO for deploy scripts, container builds and anything that expects a POSIX archive rather than a ZIP.

Closed in, open out

Proprietary RAR and CAB archives go in; ZIP or 7Z comes back, readable without buying or installing anything.

Several in one go

Drop a batch of archives, pick one destination container, and let the whole set run through together.

Common repacks

13 containers

50 MB per archive

One upload at a time, up to 50 MB. Very large backups are better split before they get here.

Nothing is retained

The archive you send is deleted as soon as repacking finishes, and the result is purged within the hour.

Workers, not luck

Open sessions queue behind everyone else. A plan runs your repacks on dedicated workers instead.
