JARIN
A JAR is a ZIP archive with a manifest inside, used to ship Java classes, libraries and their resources as one unit. Everything it holds is ordinary compressed data. Convert one when you want to inspect or repackage the contents with tools that know nothing about Java.
ZIPOUT
Windows, macOS and Linux all open ZIP files with no extra software, which is why it stays the default for sending a folder to someone. Compression is moderate and unpacking is quick. Pick ZIP when you care more about the other person being able to open the file than about squeezing out every last megabyte.
