MTSIN
MTS is what Sony, Panasonic and Canon camcorders write when recording AVCHD, typically H.264 at 1080i or 1080p with multichannel audio. The files live inside a folder structure on the memory card rather than standing on their own. Convert them once they are copied off, since plenty of editing software and nearly every phone will not open MTS directly.

AVI comes from the early days of Windows multimedia and simply interleaves chunks of video and audio in one file. That plain structure is why old editing suites, set top players and archive tools still open it without complaint. Most people meet AVI in footage recorded years ago and convert it when they need a smaller file or playback on a phone.
