MTS is what Sony, Panasonic and Canon camcorders write when recording AVCHD, typically H.264 at 1080i or 1080p with multichannel audio. The files live inside a folder structure on the memory card rather than standing on their own. Convert them once they are copied off, since plenty of editing software and nearly every phone will not open MTS directly.

MOV is the QuickTime container Apple designed, and it is what comes out of iPhones, Final Cut Pro and most Mac recording tools. It holds high bitrate video and audio along with the timecode and track data editors depend on. Keep footage as MOV while you are cutting it on a Mac, then convert when you hand it to Windows users or put it on a website.
