MTSIN
MTS is what Sony, Panasonic and Canon camcorders write when recording AVCHD, typically H.264 at 1080i or 1080p with multichannel audio. The files live inside a folder structure on the memory card rather than standing on their own. Convert them once they are copied off, since plenty of editing software and nearly every phone will not open MTS directly.
MPGOUT
MPG usually means MPEG-1 video, the standard behind Video CDs and the first wave of digital video on computers. The picture is soft by current standards, but practically every player ever written can open it, which is why it survives on old discs and in archives. Convert MPG when you need that footage in something a phone or a web page will accept.
