MTS is what Sony, Panasonic and Canon camcorders write when recording AVCHD, typically H.264 at 1080i or 1080p with multichannel audio. The files live inside a folder structure on the memory card rather than standing on their own. Convert them once they are copied off, since plenty of editing software and nearly every phone will not open MTS directly.

Matroska, seen as .mkv, is an open container with no practical limit on how many video, audio, subtitle and chapter tracks you stack inside one file. That makes it the usual home for a film kept with several language tracks and forced subtitles. Desktop players handle it well, while phones, TVs and browsers often refuse it.
