Both formats, briefly
PFAIN
PFA is a PostScript Type 1 font written out as readable ASCII. The outlines are cubic curves stored as PostScript code you can open in a text editor, which is part of why the format lingered in places where fonts get inspected or patched by hand. You will run into PFA in TeX and LaTeX installations, older print pipelines and PostScript imagesetter setups. Since design software has dropped Type 1 support, converting PFA to OTF is the usual way to keep an old typeface in service.
WOFF2OUT
WOFF2 is the second version of the web font format, and it replaces the earlier compression with Brotli, which shrinks the same outlines noticeably further. Smaller files mean the real text appears sooner on a slow connection, so this is the format to list first in a font-face rule. Current browsers all read it. Generate WOFF2 from your TTF or OTF master when a typeface is going on a site, and keep the original for desktop work.
