Both formats, briefly
PFAIN
PFA is a PostScript Type 1 font written out as readable ASCII. The outlines are cubic curves stored as PostScript code you can open in a text editor, which is part of why the format lingered in places where fonts get inspected or patched by hand. You will run into PFA in TeX and LaTeX installations, older print pipelines and PostScript imagesetter setups. Since design software has dropped Type 1 support, converting PFA to OTF is the usual way to keep an old typeface in service.
TTFOUT
TrueType came out of a joint Apple and Microsoft effort and is still the format operating systems install by default. Each glyph is drawn with quadratic curves, and the file carries hinting instructions telling the renderer how to snap strokes onto the pixel grid at small sizes. That makes TTF a dependable choice for interface type, office documents and anything headed to a printer. When you are unsure which desktop format an application will accept, TTF is usually the one it does.
