PFAIN
PFA is a PostScript Type 1 font written out as readable ASCII. The outlines are cubic curves stored as PostScript code you can open in a text editor, which is part of why the format lingered in places where fonts get inspected or patched by hand. You will run into PFA in TeX and LaTeX installations, older print pipelines and PostScript imagesetter setups. Since design software has dropped Type 1 support, converting PFA to OTF is the usual way to keep an old typeface in service.
OTFOUT
OpenType came from Microsoft and Adobe, and it is how professional type is published. It can hold outlines as cubic PostScript curves rather than quadratic ones, covers character sets far beyond Latin, and carries the tables that drive ligatures, small caps, alternate figures and contextual substitutions. Reach for OTF when a typeface has features you plan to use in InDesign, Illustrator or another engine that supports them. For a web page, convert it to WOFF2 first so visitors download less.
