Two ways to count a byte
Storage is advertised in decimal and reported in binary, and the gap widens as the numbers grow: a drive sold as one terabyte is a thousand billion bytes, while the operating system counts in powers of two and shows noticeably less. Both prefix systems sit side by side here, so the difference stops being a mystery.
Bandwidth carries its own trap. Connections are sold in bits per second and downloads are displayed in bytes per second — a factor of eight. Convert once and the speed test and the progress bar finally tell the same story.
