Both formats, briefly
JPGIN
JPG is where photographs end up by default. Its compression discards detail the eye is unlikely to notice, so a camera shot fits in a few hundred kilobytes instead of tens of megabytes. That suits scenes built from gradients and texture. It suits screenshots and line art badly, because the discarded detail shows up as smudging around hard edges. Every re-save loses a little more, so keep an original if you plan to edit the file more than once.
XBMOUT
An XBM file is an image written as C source code: an array of bytes with the width and height defined above it. That was the point in the X Window System, where a cursor or icon could be compiled straight into a program. It is monochrome and uncompressed, so it only makes sense for small, simple graphics. You still find XBM in Unix desktop source trees and in embedded projects that need a bitmap baked into the binary.
