Both formats, briefly
JPGIN
JPG is where photographs end up by default. Its compression discards detail the eye is unlikely to notice, so a camera shot fits in a few hundred kilobytes instead of tens of megabytes. That suits scenes built from gradients and texture. It suits screenshots and line art badly, because the discarded detail shows up as smudging around hard edges. Every re-save loses a little more, so keep an original if you plan to edit the file more than once.
HEICOUT
HEIC is what an iPhone saves when the camera app is left on its default setting. It uses HEVC compression, so a photo takes noticeably less space than the JPG version, and one file can hold a burst, the frames of a Live Photo, depth data and non-destructive edits. Apple devices read it without help. Plenty of Windows software, older phones and upload forms still do not, which is why HEIC is the format people most often need converted before they can share a picture.
