Both formats, briefly
JPGIN
JPG is where photographs end up by default. Its compression discards detail the eye is unlikely to notice, so a camera shot fits in a few hundred kilobytes instead of tens of megabytes. That suits scenes built from gradients and texture. It suits screenshots and line art badly, because the discarded detail shows up as smudging around hard edges. Every re-save loses a little more, so keep an original if you plan to edit the file more than once.
ICOOUT
ICO is the Windows icon container, and it is still what browsers look for at favicon.ico. A single file holds the same artwork at several sizes, commonly 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels, so the system picks the right one for a browser tab, a taskbar or a desktop shortcut instead of scaling something badly. Build one when you are adding a favicon to a site or an icon to a Windows application.
