XBMIN
An XBM file is an image written as C source code: an array of bytes with the width and height defined above it. That was the point in the X Window System, where a cursor or icon could be compiled straight into a program. It is monochrome and uncompressed, so it only makes sense for small, simple graphics. You still find XBM in Unix desktop source trees and in embedded projects that need a bitmap baked into the binary.
EXROUT
EXR was developed at Industrial Light & Magic for images that hold more range than a screen can display. Pixel values are 16 or 32 bit floating point, so a highlight can be recorded far above white and pulled back later in the grade. One file can also carry many channels at once, such as depth, motion vectors and separate render passes, which is why compositing and CGI pipelines work in it. Convert to PNG or JPG when the frame simply needs to be looked at.
