DOTMIN
DOTM is the macro enabled version of a Word template. Every document made from it inherits both the house formatting and the VBA behind it, which is how organizations distribute forms and document generators that behave the same for everyone. That macro support is also why security policies treat these files carefully.
RTFOUT
Rich Text Format carries basic styling (bold, italic, fonts, color, alignment) in a file that almost any word processor will open, including ones that stumble on .docx. Microsoft designed it as a common language between programs. Reach for it when formatting matters but you cannot be sure what software the reader has.
