M4A

M4AIN

M4A is an MPEG-4 container holding audio and nothing else, nearly always AAC and occasionally Apple Lossless. It keeps chapter marks, artwork and bookmark positions, which is why audiobooks and podcasts lean on it as much as music does. When a player rejects an M4A, converting to MP3 is the usual fix.

FLAC

FLACOUT

FLAC compresses the way a zip archive does: decode it and the original samples come back bit for bit. Files land well below the size of the same recording as WAV while staying identical in quality, and tags, cover art and high sample rates all survive. It is the sensible choice for archiving a collection or moving masters between machines.
