M4A

M4AIN

M4A is an MPEG-4 container holding audio and nothing else, nearly always AAC and occasionally Apple Lossless. It keeps chapter marks, artwork and bookmark positions, which is why audiobooks and podcasts lean on it as much as music does. When a player rejects an M4A, converting to MP3 is the usual fix.

AIFF

AIFFOUT

AIFF is Apple's uncompressed format, the Mac counterpart to WAV, storing full resolution samples with nothing discarded. Studio software on macOS reads and writes it natively, and it carries tags for artist, title and artwork. Work in AIFF while you are producing, then convert when someone needs a file small enough to send.
