XPSIN
XPS is Microsoft's fixed layout page format, written in XML and introduced on Windows as an alternative to PDF. A document saved this way renders the same wherever it opens, which suited print workflows and archiving inside Windows. Support elsewhere is thin, so converting is usually the practical step.
DOCXOUT
Word has saved to .docx since 2007. Behind the extension is a zipped set of XML parts, which keeps files smaller and makes a damaged document easier to recover than the old binary .doc. Use it when the text still needs editing and the person receiving it works in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice Writer.
