XPSIN
XPS is Microsoft's fixed layout page format, written in XML and introduced on Windows as an alternative to PDF. A document saved this way renders the same wherever it opens, which suited print workflows and archiving inside Windows. Support elsewhere is thin, so converting is usually the practical step.
DOCOUT
The .doc extension belongs to Word 97 through 2003, before Microsoft moved to XML based files. You still meet it in old archives, legal paperwork and documents that have been passed around for years. Most word processors can open one, but converting it is easier than keeping an ancient copy of Word on hand.
