TAR.XZ runs LZMA2 compression over a TAR bundle and usually ends up the smallest of the common Unix archive types. Building one asks for more processor time and memory than gzip does. It fits large downloads well, because you pay that cost once and everyone who fetches the file saves bandwidth.
