RAR is a closed format from the makers of WinRAR, known for splitting one large archive into numbered parts and for recovery data that can survive minor damage. 7Z comes from the 7-Zip project and packs files tighter than ZIP by using the LZMA and LZMA2 compressors. It also handles strong encryption and very large archives. The catch is that many computers need 7-Zip or a similar tool installed first, so 7Z suits your own storage better than files you hand to a stranger.
