CABIN
CAB, short for Cabinet, is the Microsoft package used for installers, drivers and Windows system components. A cabinet can carry a digital signature and can span several volumes. Most people meet one while taking an old installer apart, and converting it puts the contents into a form their usual tools understand.
TAROUT
A TAR file stacks many files into one without shrinking them, keeping Unix permissions, ownership and folder structure exactly as they were. On Linux that makes it the usual first step before a compressor such as gzip or xz runs over the result. Reach for plain TAR when you want a faithful bundle and will handle compression separately, or not at all.
