PSD is Photoshop's working file. Layers, masks, adjustment settings, smart objects and live text stay separate inside it, so you can reopen a design months later and move one element without rebuilding the rest. That structure makes it a poor file to hand over: PSDs are heavy, and software outside Adobe's tools usually opens them only partially or flattened.
