PNG

PNGIN

Use PNG when every pixel has to survive the save. Its compression throws nothing away, so text stays crisp, flat color stays flat, and a screenshot looks identical after ten round trips. PNG also carries a real alpha channel, which is why logos, icons and interface assets sit cleanly on any background. The trade-off is weight: a photograph stored as PNG runs several times larger than the same photo as JPG.

PCX

PCXOUT

PCX is a DOS era format, originally the native file of PC Paintbrush, and for years it was how images moved between early PC programs. It uses run length encoding, supports palettes up to 24 bit color, and is simple enough that a decoder fits in a page of code. Nothing new is written in PCX today. You run into it in old archives, scanner utilities and retro computing projects.
