Both formats, briefly
BMPIN
BMP writes pixels to disk almost exactly as they are, with no compression to undo. Files get large quickly, which is why you rarely meet one on a web page, but nothing is approximated and any Windows program can read it. It shows up in older Windows software, in scanner and screen capture output, and wherever a tool wants raw pixel data with no decoding step. Convert to PNG to keep the same quality in a fraction of the space.
PCXOUT
PCX is a DOS era format, originally the native file of PC Paintbrush, and for years it was how images moved between early PC programs. It uses run length encoding, supports palettes up to 24 bit color, and is simple enough that a decoder fits in a page of code. Nothing new is written in PCX today. You run into it in old archives, scanner utilities and retro computing projects.
