Both formats, briefly
WOFFIN
WOFF takes a TrueType or OpenType font, compresses it and attaches metadata about its origin, producing a file meant for downloading rather than installing. The W3C published it so sites could stop serving raw TTF and OTF, and every browser in general use supports it. Convert to WOFF when your web font also has to work in somewhat older browser versions. For new projects, WOFF2 squeezes the same outlines down further.
EOTOUT
EOT is Microsoft's compact wrapper around an OpenType font, made so a web page could load custom type back when Internet Explorer was the only browser that permitted it. Inside the proprietary header sits a TrueType font, tied to the sites cleared to use it. Today's browsers ignore EOT and expect WOFF2 instead. Producing one is worth doing only when something old has to keep working, such as an intranet tool pinned to a legacy version of IE.
