Both formats, briefly
PDFIN
A PDF fixes the page. Fonts, margins, columns and image placement come out identical on every screen and printer, which is why manuals, textbooks, sheet music and anything built around diagrams travel this way. The trade-off is that the text does not reflow, so a page designed for A4 turns into pinching and scrolling on a small reader. Use PDF when the layout itself carries meaning, and convert it to EPUB or AZW3 when you would rather have text that resizes to the screen.
HTMLZOUT
HTMLZ is a book packed as ordinary web files: the HTML holding the text, a stylesheet, and the images, zipped together into one archive. Nothing sits behind a proprietary container, so this is the format to pick when you want to edit a book by hand, feed it to your own publishing script, or inspect how the markup came out of an earlier conversion. Calibre reads and writes it, which makes it a comfortable stopping point between two other formats. Choose HTMLZ when the file is a working copy rather than the version someone will read.
