MOBIIN
MOBI is the format Amazon built its early Kindle library on, after buying it from Mobipocket. Books in it keep bookmarks, highlights and your place in the text, and Kindle hardware from that era reads them directly. Newer Kindles moved on to AZW3, so MOBI now matters mainly when an older device or a reading app of the same vintage is still in service. If you inherited a shelf of .mobi files, converting them to EPUB or AZW3 keeps those books readable on current hardware.
HTMLZOUT
HTMLZ is a book packed as ordinary web files: the HTML holding the text, a stylesheet, and the images, zipped together into one archive. Nothing sits behind a proprietary container, so this is the format to pick when you want to edit a book by hand, feed it to your own publishing script, or inspect how the markup came out of an earlier conversion. Calibre reads and writes it, which makes it a comfortable stopping point between two other formats. Choose HTMLZ when the file is a working copy rather than the version someone will read.
