Both formats, briefly
LRFIN
LRF is Sony's own ebook format, also known as BBeB or BroadBand eBook, used across the Sony Reader line before the company switched to EPUB. It handles reflowed text, images, embedded fonts and simple styling, which covered what those devices were sold to do. You will mostly meet LRF in libraries bought from the old Sony store or synced onto a PRS-series reader. Convert it when you want those titles on hardware that never spoke Sony's format.
HTMLZOUT
HTMLZ is a book packed as ordinary web files: the HTML holding the text, a stylesheet, and the images, zipped together into one archive. Nothing sits behind a proprietary container, so this is the format to pick when you want to edit a book by hand, feed it to your own publishing script, or inspect how the markup came out of an earlier conversion. Calibre reads and writes it, which makes it a comfortable stopping point between two other formats. Choose HTMLZ when the file is a working copy rather than the version someone will read.
