LITIN
LIT was Microsoft's ebook format, built on its Compressed HTML Help technology and read through the Microsoft Reader app. Files reflow their text and can carry bookmarks, annotations and DRM. Microsoft retired Reader in 2012, so almost nothing shipping today will open a .lit file, and the format survives mostly in collections assembled in the 2000s. Send one through the converter to get a copy that your phone, tablet or e-reader can actually display.
FB2OUT
FB2, short for FictionBook, keeps a whole book inside one XML file: chapters, paragraphs, footnotes, cover art and the metadata describing them. The structure is marked up rather than laid out, so software can re-render or convert the book without guessing where a chapter begins. The format is common in Russian-language catalogues and is handled by a long list of desktop and mobile readers. Convert to FB2 when the library or app you are feeding asks for it, and away from FB2 when the book needs to land on a Kindle or Kobo.
