XLSX is the workbook format Excel writes today, built on Open XML. A single file can hold many sheets along with formulas, charts, pivot tables and conditional formatting rules. Choose it when the calculations need to travel with the numbers instead of only the results.
RTFOUT
Rich Text Format carries basic styling (bold, italic, fonts, color, alignment) in a file that almost any word processor will open, including ones that stumble on .docx. Microsoft designed it as a common language between programs. Reach for it when formatting matters but you cannot be sure what software the reader has.
