DOTX files • Max 25MB per file • Up to 10 files
Both formats, briefly
DOTXIN
DOTX is a Word template with no macros in it. It holds the styles, margins, headers and theme that new documents should start from, so letters and reports across a team come out looking alike. Open one and Word hands you a fresh document based on it instead of editing the template.
DOTMOUT
DOTM is the macro enabled version of a Word template. Every document made from it inherits both the house formatting and the VBA behind it, which is how organizations distribute forms and document generators that behave the same for everyone. That macro support is also why security policies treat these files carefully.
