DOCMIN
A DOCM is a Word document allowed to carry VBA macros. Teams use them where the document does work by itself: filling fields, checking a form before it is submitted, assembling a report from what someone typed. Since that code actually runs, these files are normally accepted only from trusted internal sources.
RTFOUT
Rich Text Format carries basic styling (bold, italic, fonts, color, alignment) in a file that almost any word processor will open, including ones that stumble on .docx. Microsoft designed it as a common language between programs. Reach for it when formatting matters but you cannot be sure what software the reader has.
