DjVu was designed for scanned pages. It splits text, line art and photographs into separate layers and compresses each one in the way that suits it, so a scanned book stays small enough to pass around while the type stays legible. Digital libraries and archives of older academic work rely on it.
RTFOUT
Rich Text Format carries basic styling (bold, italic, fonts, color, alignment) in a file that almost any word processor will open, including ones that stumble on .docx. Microsoft designed it as a common language between programs. Reach for it when formatting matters but you cannot be sure what software the reader has.
