WMA is Microsoft's answer to MP3, wired into Windows Media Player and the portable players of that era. CD libraries ripped on a Windows machine in the 2000s are full of it. Devices outside the Windows world tend to refuse WMA, so convert a collection before moving it to a phone or a Mac.

FLAC compresses the way a zip archive does: decode it and the original samples come back bit for bit. Files land well below the size of the same recording as WAV while staying identical in quality, and tags, cover art and high sample rates all survive.
