WAV keeps samples exactly as they were captured, with no compression, so files are large and nothing has been thrown away. That is what you want while recording, mixing or handing stems to a collaborator, because every pass through a lossy format costs a little quality. Master to WAV, then convert to something smaller for listeners.
AC3OUT
AC3, sold as Dolby Digital, carries up to six channels in one stream: five full range plus a low frequency effects track. DVDs, Blu-rays and broadcast television settled on it, so home cinema receivers decode it in hardware. When an AC3 track plays as silence on a laptop or phone, converting it to stereo AAC or MP3 clears the problem.
