MP3 discards the parts of a recording most listeners cannot pick out, which is how a song shrinks to a few megabytes and still sounds right through earbuds or a car stereo. Almost every device made in the past twenty-five years reads it. Pick MP3 when the file has to work on hardware you cannot check first.
OPUSOUT
Opus is a modern codec aimed at real time sound. It encodes with very little delay, changes bitrate on the fly, and stays intelligible when bandwidth drops away. Voice and video calling tools use it for exactly that, and WebRTC treats it as the default. Music encodes well too, but standalone hardware rarely supports it, so convert before loading files onto an older player.
