TAR.GZIN
TAR.GZ wraps a TAR bundle in gzip compression, and the shorter .tgz ending means the same thing. Nearly every Linux system unpacks it with tools that are already installed, so source code and server backups travel this way. Choose it when you want a smaller file without waiting long for the archive to build.
7ZOUT
7Z comes from the 7-Zip project and packs files tighter than ZIP by using the LZMA and LZMA2 compressors. It also handles strong encryption and very large archives. The catch is that many computers need 7-Zip or a similar tool installed first, so 7Z suits your own storage better than files you hand to a stranger.
