TAR to CPIO converter
Turn TAR into CPIO
Send us the TAR you already have and take away a CPIO. Handled on our servers, deleted the moment the job ends.
or drag and drop files here
TAR files • Max 50MB per file • Up to 10 files
Both formats, briefly
TARIN
A TAR file stacks many files into one without shrinking them, keeping Unix permissions, ownership and folder structure exactly as they were. On Linux that makes it the usual first step before a compressor such as gzip or xz runs over the result. Reach for plain TAR when you want a faithful bundle and will handle compression separately, or not at all.
CPIOOUT
CPIO stores a stream of files together with their metadata, and it is still standard where Linux boots from an initramfs image or where an RPM package carries its payload. Desktop software rarely opens it directly. Convert a CPIO archive when you need to see what a boot image or a package actually contains.
Three steps, start to finish
Add your TAR
Drag it onto the page, or pull it in from your computer, Google Drive or Dropbox.
CPIO is preselected
This page is already set to write CPIO. Switch the target if you change your mind.
Take the CPIO
Grab the result the moment the job clears. Your upload is wiped straight afterwards.
